CUBICULUM. — It is a common term among the Romans to denote the bedrooms that opened onto the sides of the atrium of the house.
It is often found in epigraphy to signify the family burial chamber or for the members of a collegium, or the upper room (*e. superius*) for funeral rites (CIL, VI, 1842; XIV, 158). Among Christians it is used for a burial chamber (G. B. De Rossi, *Roma storica*, 111, Rome 1877, p. 46 and pl. 5, 3; *e. duplex* (ibid., p. 464; id., *Iscrizione christiana*, I, ibid. 1856-61, p. 45).
