DELLA TORRE, DISMAS. - Journalist, b. in Genoa on 12 Sept. 1820 to the noble house of the counts of Lavagna, d. there on 17 Nov. 1891. He began his studies in the seminary of Genoa and completed them with the Somaschi Fathers of S. Maria in Aquiro in Rome. He was ordained a priest there around 1848. Having returned to Genoa, he officiated in the church of the Maddalena and then became primicerius of the archconfraternity of the Trinity of Pilgrims at the Pammattone hospital.
In 1860 he founded the weekly La Liguria and in 1862 the daily La Specola. In struggle against the prevailing liberalism, he championed the strictest Catholic thought, at times erring on the side of conservatism. He lavished on those periodicals not only his culture and his work but also his conspicuous fortune, to the point of being reduced almost to poverty. In the last years of his life he was rector of the small rural parish of the Nasche near Genoa.
