Demsus

DEMSUS. - A village in Transylvania where there exists the oldest church, today Romanian Catholic, in Romania. Built with stones, altars and bas-reliefs taken from the nearby Roman ruins, it was regarded in the 19th century as a mausoleum or an ancient pagan temple. Iorga established that it was a Byzantine church, dating, in his view, to the 15th-16th centuries. The temple has only Byzantine elements, but it is built according to a local style. It could date back to the 13th century; indeed, according to the opinion of Prof. Vătăsianu, of the Romanian Academy of Rome (1946), it would be from the end of the 12th century, on account of the motifs of Dalmatian origin of the 10th century found in it.
