CORESI. - Romanian deacon, b. ca. 1525 and d. 1600, from an Italo-Greek family that came from Chios to Wallachia. He was the father of the religious and literary language of the Romanians.

From 1560 to 1581, in the printing house founded by the German Lutherans of Braşov (Transylvania), aided by two Romanian priests, he published, together with 10 religious works in Slavonic, 6 others in Romanian (2 cazanie, a tetraevangelion, the acts of the apostles and a psalter). In these he used the old manuscript translations of the two preceding centuries, which had arisen, it seems, under especially Protestant influence. All the religious and liturgical texts published thereafter imitated this model, thus giving the Romanian literary language a singular unity.
