CORESI. – Romanian deacon, born ca. 1525 and died in 1600, from an Italo-Greek family that had come from Chios to Wallachia. He was the father of the religious and literary language of the Romanians.
From 1560 to 1581, in the printing house founded by the German Lutherans of Braşov (Transylvania), assisted by two Romanian priests, he published, together with 10 religious works in Church Slavonic, 6 others in Romanian (2 cazanie, a tetraevangel, the Acts of the Apostles, and a psaltire). In these he used the old manuscript translations of the preceding two centuries, which seem to have arisen especially under Protestant influence. All religious and liturgical texts published thereafter imitated this model, thus giving the Romanian literary language a singular unity.
