DE MONTIBUS SINA ET SION

DE MONTIBUS SINA ET SION. - A writing falsely attributed in some manuscripts to s. Cipriano. The work seeks to explain the apparent contrast between Ex. 2, 3: “From Sion the law shall come forth” and the legislation on Sinai.

Mount Sion is heavenly, Mount Sinai earthly; the former represents the New, the latter the Old Testament. The work is written in popular Latin and contains several inaccuracies (Sinai in Palestine, chap. 3). Its Christological doctrine is very primitive. It does not seem certain that the author knew the writings of s. Cipriano (against H. Koch, Cyprianische Untersuchungen, Bonn 1926, p. 421 sg.); an origin in the pre-Cyprianic period cannot be excluded, but its place cannot be determined. The argument is that of anti-Jewish writings.
