DEVOTE VIRGINS OF SAINT CATHERINE. - A women's congregation founded around 1579 in the diocese of Warmia, through the work of the local bishop, Msgr. Martin Kromer (1512-89), and of Regina Protmann (1552-1613). Its constitutions can be considered one of the earliest examples of those of women's congregations with simple vows. Its purpose is the care of the sick, including in their homes, and the instruction and education of girls. In 1902 the constitutions were approved by the Holy See and adapted to the CIC in 1924. At present the sisters number about 1,160 in 140 houses.
