DAMES OF SAINT LOUIS. - A women's congregation with simple vows, founded in Strasbourg in 1842 through the work of Mademoiselle Louise Haußmann, as the women's branch of the institute of St. Louis or Ludovico, which Abbot Louis M. Bautain began in 1832, after his conversion to Catholicism, and which Gregory XVI approved on July 17, 1844. In 1869 the bishop of Meaux approved the constitutions of the D. of St. L., dedicated to the education of young girls and the visiting of the sick. At present the professed sisters number about 70, with the generalate house at Meaux.
