DAME DI SAN LUIGI. – A women’s congregation under simple vows, founded at Strasbourg in 1842 through the efforts of Miss Luisa Haußmann, as the female branch of the institute of S. Luigi or Ludovico, which Abbé Luigi M. Bautain initiated in 1832, after his conversion to Catholicism, and which Gregory XVI approved on 17 July 1844. In 1869 the bishop of Meaux approved the constitutions of the D. di S. L., devoted to the education of young girls and to visiting the sick. At present there are approximately 70 professed sisters, with the mother house in Meaux.
