DÀMIA (Δαμία). — Greek goddess venerated together with Auxesia. They were worshipped in Aegina and in Trezene, where the festival of the Lithobólia was celebrated in their honor, and at Epidaurus, where the oracle of Delphi had ordered that statues of them be erected from olive wood.
In Italy D. was worshipped at Agylla, in Etruria (gymnastic and equestrian contests, ordered by the Delphic oracle), at Tarentum, and at Rome, where she was identified with the Bona Dea and received a sacrifice (damium) offered by a special priestess (damiatrix).
