DOLCI, CARLO. - Painter, b. in Florence on 25 May 1616, d. there on 17 Jan. 1686. A pupil of Jacopo Vignali and of Matteo Rosselli, his manner shows analogies of chiaroscuro taste (livid shadows) and of morphology with the works of Furini, so much so that he came to be considered a follower of the latter.
He was precocious in art, and at the age of sixteen he painted a masterpiece of his: the portrait of Ainolfo de' Bardi (Florence, Count Bardi), which reveals incisiveness of character, breadth of composition and chromatic sensitivity (the relationship between the costume and the luminosity of the background). He then executed numerous paintings of religious subject (especially half-figures of the Madonna, of the Mater Dolorosa, of saints and holy women) of wholly external piety, in a style made up of crystalline surfaces and affected gradations. Only in 1672 did D. go to Innsbruck, to portray there Claudia Felicitas, granddaughter of Cosimo II de' Medici; otherwise he always lived in Florence. Among the most notable works are remembered: the Madonna with the Child (Florence, Palazzo Pitti); the Herodias (Dresden, picture gallery); the St. Cecilia (ibid.); the Self-Portrait (Florence, Uffizi). - See pl.
