DORÉ, HENRI. — Jesuit, missionary, b. at Bessé-sur-Braye (Sarthe) on 4 August 1859, d. at Shanghai on 4 December 1931. He left for China in 1886 and worked tirelessly for 20 years in the then mission of Kiang-nen, comprising the provinces of Kiang-su and Ngan-hoei, presiding over various districts and Christian communities, even amid hardships made more severe by the uncertain political circumstances. In 1919 he returned to Shanghai, devoting himself to the priestly ministry.
During his life as a missionary he had observed with astonishment the great number of superstitions prevailing among the people; he had gathered information, visited pagodas, temples, and sanctuaries, and collected a large quantity of material. He was thus able to publish in 1924 a small Manual des superstitions chinoises; and later his major work Recherches sur les superstitions chinoises (17 vols., Zikawei 1911–38).
