DORÉ, HENRI. – Jesuit, missionary, b. at Bessé-sur-Braye (Sarthe) on 4 Aug. 1859, d. at Shanghai on 4 Dec. 1931. Having departed for China in 1886, he worked indefatigably for twenty years in the then mission of Kiang-nen, which encompassed the provinces of Kiang-su and Ngan-hoeï, overseeing various districts and Christian communities, even amid hardships exacerbated by uncertain political circumstances. In 1919 he returned to Shanghai, where he continued his priestly ministry.
During his life as a missionary, he had noted with astonishment the large number of surviving superstitious practices among the people, gathered information, visited pagodas, temples, and shrines, and amassed a vast quantity of material. He was thus able to publish in 1924 a small *Manual des superstitions chinoises*; and later his major work, *Recherches sur les superstitions chinoises* (17 vols., Zikawei 1911–38).
