DORÉ, HENRI. - Jesuit, missionary, b. at Bessé-sur-Braye (Sarthe) on 4 Aug. 1859, d. at Shanghai on 4 Dec. 1931. Having left for China in 1886, he labored indefatigably for 20 years in the then mission of Kiang-nen, comprising the provinces of Kiang-su and Ngan-hoei, presiding over various districts and Christian communities, even amid hardships, made more serious by uncertain political circumstances. In 1919 he returned to Shanghai, attending to the priestly ministry.
In his life as a missionary he had noted with wonder the great number of superstitions prevailing among the people, had gathered information, visited pagodas, temples and shrines, and collected a great quantity of material. He was thus able to publish in 1924 a small Manual des superstitions chinoises; and then his great work Recherches sur les superstitions chinoises (17 vols., Zikawei 1911-38)
