ELTZ, JAKOB. — Archbishop and prince, born in Trier in 1510, died there on 4 June 1581. Appointed archbishop of Trier in 1567, he was the first German prince zealous in applying the Tridentine provisions, with the collaboration of the Jesuits, thereby earning extensive praise from Pius V. diocese, he had the chancellor Wimpfeling as his collaborator. E. was among the most able defenders of Catholicism in the Rhenish Churches.
