ELTZ, JAKOB. - Archbishop and prince, b. at Trier in 1510, d. there on 4 June 1581. Appointed archbishop of Trier in 1567, he was the first German prince diligent in applying the Tridentine provisions, with the collaboration of the Jesuits, earning ample praise from Pius V. In the administration of the diocese he had as his collaborator the chancellor Wimpfeling. E. was among the most effective defenders of Catholicism in the Rhenish Churches.
