ERIVAN

YEREVAN. - City of the district of Kotajkh, about 10 km. from Eghmiadzia, toward the east, on the Zanga River, in a plain over 1000 m. high in Caucasia. Before the 7th century there is no information about E. The katholikos Abraham I (607-615/17), in the synod he held at Dwin in 609, classifies E. among the principal centers of monasticism. From the 8th century onward the Arabs, the Tartars and the Idh of Persia many times destroyed and plundered it.

In E. the churches of St. James Nisibenus, of St. Sergius Martyr, and the hermitage called Anapai were famous. E. is now the capital of the Soviet Republic of Armenia. Since it became the capital, it possesses a university, a conservatory, many scientific institutes, and a rich library.
