FALCANDUS, HUGH. - Historian. Nothing is known about his origins; he lived in Sicily during the 12th century and is the author of a Historia or Liber regni Siciliae, in which he narrates the events of the island from 1154 to 1169, that is from the death of Roger II to the regency of Margaret during the minority of William II, setting forth the facts of which he was a witness or which he heard from direct witnesses, dwelling deliberately and with passion on the struggles of the parties and of the men of the court.

Twenty years later he wrote the Epistula ad Petrum Panormitiae ecclesie thesaurarium, in which, more as a politician than as a historian, in the face of the threat of foreign domination following the marriage of Constance to Henry VI, he invokes the concordant action of all Sicilians under an Italian king against the Germans, setting forth the evils that would otherwise ensue.
