FORUM IULIUM CARNICUM. – Now Zuglio in Carnia. Originally a vicus, then a forum and finally a colonia, it stood on the road that led from Aquileia to Noricum through the Monte Croce Carnico Pass. It was an episcopal see, and the remains of a basilica have been identified.
The first bishop whose memory has been preserved is a Ianuarius in 490; a Maxentius is mentioned toward the end of the sixth century. Paul the Deacon (Hist. Lang., VI, 51) mentions the two bishops Fidenzio and Amatore who, under the protection of the Lombard duke, had established their see in Cividale (Forum Iulii), where there had previously been no bishop. Amatore
was driven out of there by Callistus, patriarch of Aquileia. Later, the church of S. Pietro, built on the mountain, became the seat of a collegiate church with pastoral care throughout the But Valley.
