FORUM IULIUM CARNICUM. - Now Zuglio in Carnia. First a vicus, then a forum, then a colony, it stood on the road that led from Aquileia through the Monte Croce Carnico pass into Noricum. It was an episcopal see, and the remains of a basilica could be identified.

The first bishop of whom a memory was preserved is a Ianuarius in 490; a Maxentius is remembered at the end of the 6th century. Paul the Deacon (Hist. Lang., VI, 51) recalls the two bishops Fidentius and Amator who, under the protection of the Lombard duke, had established their see in Cividale (Forum Iulii), where there had been no bishop. Amator was driven out of there by Callistus, patriarch of Aquileia. Later the church of St. Peter built on the mount became the seat of a collegiate church with the care of souls throughout the But Valley.
