FORTUNAZIANO. - Bishop of Aquileia, African by origin, he was elected about 342 amid the disturbances provoked by Ursacio and Valente, Arian bishops. He was present at the Council of Sardica (343), and in 345 he received as guests at Aquileia St. Athanasius and the emperor Costante. Pope Liberio placed great confidence in him on the occasion of the Council of Milan, desired by Costanzo in 355. But F. subscribed to the condemnation of St. Athanasius, and in 357–58 he is said to have played a large part in bending Liberio to the wishes of the emperor Costanzo. There is no further news of him; certainly by 371 he was already dead.
