VALERIANO, bishop, saint. — He succeeded Fortunaziano, bishop of Aquileia before 371.
He took part in the Council that Pope Damaso held in Rome around 371, when Aussenzio, the Arian bishop of Milan, was deposed; in 372 he corresponded with s. Basilio of Caesarea concerning the Arian controversies. Around 370–73 he hosted Rufino and s. Girolamo in Aquileia, who wrote with such praise of the clergy of Aquileia. In 381 he took part in the Council presided over in Aquileia by s. Ambrogio and then, in 382, in that presided over in Rome by Pope Damaso. He died on 27 November 388.
