FANTINO of CALABRIA, saint. — Basilian ascetic of the 10th century, who lived in the famous region of the Mercurion, between Calabria and Lucania, and died at Thessalonica on 25 July 970.
He was one of the spiritual masters of St NILUS, from whose biography the details of his asceticism and method are learned. Foreseeing the Saracen invasions, F. fled to Greece with other monks, and after various peregrinations settled at Thessalonica, where he died at the age of about 70.
