FANTINO OF CALABRIA, Saint. - Basilian ascetic of the 10th century, who lived in the famous region of the Mercurion, between Calabria and Lucania, died at Thessalonica on 25 July 970.
He was one of the spiritual masters of St. Nilus, from whose biography the particulars of his asceticism and of his method are learned. Foreseeing the invasions of the Saracens, F. fled to Greece with other monks, and, after various wanderings, he settled at Thessalonica, where he died at the age of about 70.
