EULOGIO di CORDOVA, saint. - Spanish theologian and martyr of the 9th century.
At the school of Abbot Sperandeo, he distinguished himself by learning and holiness; he was ordained priest and obtained a public teaching post in Cordova, which at that time was one of Spain’s cultural centres. He visited the most illustrious monasteries of Navarre; he went to Pamplona, Saragozza, and Toledo. In 850 he was imprisoned during the Muslim persecution together with the bishop and the priests of Cordova.
There he composed an Exhortation to martyrdom for the virgins Flore and Maria, who shed their blood for Christ. Released from prison, he devoted himself to collecting the acts of the martyrs, in a work entitled Memoriale. He also composed the Apologeticum, in which he refutes the doctrines of Ausmetto. Elected archbishop of Toledo, he was not even able to be consecrated, having been martyred by the Saracens on 11 March 850, which has remained the day of his feast.
