EULOGIUS OF CÓRDOBA, Saint. - Spanish theologian and martyr of the 9th century. A pupil of the abbot Sperandeo, he distinguished himself by his learning and holiness, was ordained a priest and obtained a public teaching post at Cordova, which at that time was one of the cultural centers of Spain. He visited the most illustrious monasteries of Navarre; he was at Pamplona, Saragossa and Toledo. In 850 he was imprisoned by the Muslim persecution together with the bishop and the priests of Cordova.

There he composed an Exhortatio to martyrdom for the virgins Flora and Maria, who gave their blood for Christ. Released from prison, he set about collecting the acts of the martyrs, in a work which he entitled Memoriale. He also composed the Apologeticum, in which he refutes the doctrines of Alvarus. Elected archbishop of Toledo, he could not even be consecrated, having been martyred by the Saracens on 11 March 850, which has remained the day of his feast.
