EULOGIUS OF CORDOVA, St. — Spanish theologian and martyr of the 9th century. Under the guidance of Abbot Sperandeo, he distinguished himself for his learning and holiness, was ordained priest, and obtained a public teaching post in Córdoba, which at that time was one of the cultural centers of Spain. He visited the most illustrious monasteries of Navarre; he was in Pamplona, Saragossa, and Toledo. In 850 he was imprisoned during the Muslim persecution together with the bishop and the priests of Córdoba.
There he composed an *Evotatio* on the martyrdom of the holy virgins Flora and Mary, who gave their blood for Christ. Released from prison, he set about collecting the acts of the martyrs in a work which he entitled *Memoriae*. He also composed the *Apologeticum*, in which he refutes the doctrines of Muhammad. Elected archbishop of Toledo, he was not even able to be consecrated, having been martyred by the Saracens on 11 March 850, which has remained the day of his feast.
