FICKER, KASPAR JULIUS, VON

FICKER, KASPAR JULIUS, von. – Jurist and historian, b. at Paderborn on 30 Apr. 1826, d. at Innsbruck on 10 July 1902. He studied at Bonn, Münster, and Berlin, and from 1852 was professor of general history at Innsbruck, where in 1863 he moved to teach in the law faculty. In 1866 he was appointed a member of the Academy of Vienna.

In controversy with Sybel, he defended, in his works *Das deutsche Kaiserreich in seinem universalen und nationalen Beziehungen* (Innsbruck 1861) and *Deutsches Königtum und Kaiserthum* (1862), the policy of the *Grossdeutsche*, i.e., the pan-Germanic and universalistic conception of the function of the Holy Roman Empire.

Other works of great importance are his *Untersuchungen zur Rechtsgeschichte* (1894–97), *Forschungen zur Reichs- und Rechtsgeschichte Italiens* (1864–74), and the edition of the *Regesta Imperii* of Böhmer (1879–1901).
