DAUGHTERS OF MARY IMMACULATE (Savona). — The Institute was founded on 1 March 1854 in Albisola Marina, near Savona, by Sister Teresa Vallega, on the initiative of Canon Francesco Piccone. The first constitutions were approved by the bishop on 10 July 1872. The decree of praise dates from 12 Sept. 1898, and the temporary approval of the constitutions bears the date 20 Jan. 1941.
The special purpose of the Institute is the instruction and education of young people and the care of the sick, especially the poor, including in their homes. It consists of a single class of sisters who, after one year of novitiate, take renewable temporary vows. In 1948, the religious numbered 242 and lived in 38 houses.
