FILIPPO, bishop of GORTINA. — Little is known about him; the only source on which the information available depends is Eusebius of Caesarea. He was bishop between 160 and 170; Dionysius of Corinth wrote him a letter in which he praised his faithful for the courage they had shown during the persecutions and exhorted them to beware of heretics. Eusebius further reports that F. composed a work against Marcion, but it has not come down to us. In the historical martyrologies he is commemorated as a martyr on 11 April, but this designation finds confirmation in no ancient document.
