FILIPPO, VESCOVO DI GORTINA

PHILIP, Bishop of Gortyna. - Little is known of him; the only source on which the surviving information depends is Eusebius of Caesarea. He was bishop between 160 and 170; Dionysius of Corinth wrote him a letter in which he praised his faithful for the courage they showed during the persecutions, and urged them to be on their guard against heretics. Eusebius further reports that F. composed a work against Marcion, but it has not come down to us. In the historical martyrologies he is commemorated as a martyr on April 11, but this designation of his finds confirmation in no ancient document.
