PHILIP, bishop of GORTYNA. — Little is known about him; the only source from which the information derives is Eusebius of Caesarea. He was bishop between 160 and 170; Dionysius of Corinth wrote him a letter in which he praised his faithful for the courage they had shown during the persecutions and exhorted them to beware of heretics. Eusebius also reports that F. composed a work against Marcion, but it has not come down to us. In the historical martyrologies he is remembered as a martyr on April 11, but this qualification finds no confirmation in any ancient document.
