FRANCIS OF ZUMPANO. - Calabrian Augustinian, reformer of his Order, b. at Zumpano ca. 1455, d. at Soverato in Nov. 1519, for which reason he is also called F. da Soverato.

Wishing to bring the Hermits of St. Augustine back to a rigorous observance of the rule, he obtained in 1515 the approval of Cardinal Egidio da Viterbo, general of the Order, with the faculty to erect a new Congregation within that same Order and under the obedience of the general. He founded the convents of Aprigliano, of Campo d'Arato, of Castelvetero and of Soverato. Many miracles are attributed to him, among them the restoration of the dead to life, the healing of the sick, and the multiplication of loaves. He was called "blessed" by the people. But the canonical process has remained interrupted.
