FRANCESCO da ZUMPANO. - Calabrian Augustinian, reformer of his Order, b. at Zumpano c. 1455, d. at Soverato in Nov. 1519, whence he is also called F. da Soverato.
Wishing to lead the Hermits of S. Agostino back to strict observance of the rule, in 1515 he obtained the approval of Card. Egidio da Viterbo, general of the Order, with the faculty to establish a new Congregation within the same Order and under the obedience of the general. He founded the convents of Aprigliano, Campo d'Arato, Castelvetero, and Soverato. Many miracles are attributed to him, including the resuscitation of the dead, the healing of the sick, and the multiplication of bread. He was called “blessed” by the people. But the canonical process has remained interrupted.
