BROTHERS OF SAINT VINCENT DE' PAOLI. - Religious congregation founded in Paris in 1845 by G. Le Prevost, for the purpose of caring for the spiritual, social and professional welfare of workers.

Young priests entered the nascent institute: the first among them was Henry Planchat, called Venator animarum because of his zeal, killed in 1871 by the insurgents of the Paris Commune. In the Institute, laypeople work alongside priests, both in its direction and in its various works of charity, such as patronages for children, apprentices, and young workers, orphanages, workers' and soldiers' clubs, and professional organizations aimed at restoring the Christian social order. The promoter of the professional activity was M. Maighen, with the creation of the Association of Catholic Workers' Clubs. Definitively approved by Pius XI in 1924 and widespread in France and Canada, the Congregation has 250 religious in 30 houses.
