FUX, JOHANN JOSEPH. – Musician, born in Hirtenfeld in Steiermark in 1660, died in Vienna on 14 February 1741. From 1696 to 1702 he was organist of the Scottish College in Vienna; in 1698 he was given the title of composer of the imperial court, in 1705 that of second choirmaster, in 1713 that of deputy choirmaster, and in 1715 that of first choirmaster at St Stephen’s.
Besides several operas and the celebrated Gradus ad Parnassum (1725), later translated into German, Italian, French, and English, among his numerous religious compositions (50 Masses, 3 requiems, 57 vespers and psalms, 10 oratorios), the following have been printed, among others: a Concentus musico-instrumentalis (1701), four Masses, and twenty-seven motets (in Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich, vols. I and II).
