FOGGIA, FRANCESCO. - Musician, b. in Rome in 1605, d. there in 1688 and buried in S. Prassede. He studied with Cifra, Nassini and Agostini. He was maestro di cappella of the Elector of Cologne, Ferdinand Maximilian, then at the court of Bavaria and of Archduke Leopold of Austria.

He then passed from the cathedrals of Narni and Montefiascone to the Roman churches of S. Maria in Aquiro, S. Maria in Trastevere, S. Giovanni in Laterano, S. Lorenzo in Damaso and S. Maria Maggiore, where his son Antonio was his successor. Many books of motets, masses, sacrae cantiones, litanies, psalms, offertories etc. remain, written from 1640 to 1681. In the Lettera scritta dal sig. Autimo Liberati in risposta ad una del sig. Ovidio Persapegi (Rome 1684), there is a high praise of F. F.'s music. Moreover Martini, in his Saggio di contrappunto (Bologna 1774-1775) analyzes some motets of the Roman musician.
