JAMES V, King of Scotland. - Born at Linlithgow on 10 April 1512, died at Falkland on 12 December 1542. After the regency of his mother he was deemed capable of governing in 1524. In 1528, having escaped from Angus, the head of the Anglophile party, he reverted to the traditional policy of his predecessors, aimed at subduing the nobles and centralizing power. For this purpose he had the support of the clergy, thanks to the resistance he opposed to English intrusions, not only on the political plane but also on the religious one. The rivalry culminated in the war that Henry VIII launched against Scotland (1542), after the nephew had rejected his every approach to make common cause against Rome. Abandoned by his barons, J. V saw Scotland invaded and died shortly after the defeat of Solway Moss, leaving as heir his only legitimate daughter, Mary Stuart.
