JOHN THE TEUTONIC. - This is the name by which G. Zemecke is known. A canonist, he studied at Bologna, where he later taught, and was then provost in Halberstadt, where he died on 25 April 1245 or 1246.

He wrote the gloss on Gratian's Decretum which was later reworked by Bartholomew of Brescia (1258) and regarded as the ordinary gloss. T.'s work, composed at Bologna, was a magnificent handbook for the schools and the courts, in which the earlier glossators were used and the doctrine that was then most commonly accepted was set forth. He also composed an Apparatus in Compilationem IV.
