GIOVANNI TEUTONICO. — This is the name by which G. Zemecke is known. A canonist, he studied in Bologna, where he later taught, and was subsequently provost in Halberstadt, where he died on 25 April 1245 or 1246.
He wrote the gloss on Gratian’s Decree, which was later reworked by Bartolomeo da Brescia (1258) and regarded as the ordinary gloss. T.’s work, composed in Bologna, was a magnificent handbook for schools and courts, drawing on earlier glossators and expressing the doctrine most commonly accepted at the time. He also composed an Apparatus on Compilatio IV.
