GIOVANNI TEUTONICO. — This is the name by which G. Zemecke is known. A canonist, he studied at Bologna, where he later taught, and then became provost in Halberstadt, where he died on 25 April 1245 or 1246.
He wrote the gloss on Gratian’s Decree, which was later reworked by Bartholomew of Brescia (1258) and regarded as the glossa ordinata. The work of T., composed at Bologna, was a splendid handbook for schools and tribunals, in which the earlier glossators were utilized and the doctrine then most commonly accepted was expressed. He also composed an Apparatus in Compilationem IV.
