GRATIANUS, CARDINALIS. – Canonist of the 12th century, designated in ancient manuscripts by the generic name Cardinalis. Born in Pisa, he taught canon law at Bologna; from 1168 he signed himself S.R.E. subdiaconus et notarius until 1178, when he became Cardinalis diaconus tituli SS. Cosmae et Damiani. He belongs to the group of the principal glossators of the Decretum; indeed, it seems that around 1160 he composed an Apparatus.
