### GRAND ISLAND, DIOCESE OF
A diocese in the United States of America, in Nebraska. The diocese was erected on March 8, 1912, under the name and with residence in Kearney, by separation from the diocese of Omaha and as a suffragan of Dubuque. On April 11, 1917, the see was transferred to Grand Island, and it became a suffragan of Omaha; the church of St. Mary was erected as the cathedral.
The diocese covers 14,875 sq km, with a population of 206,076, of whom 29,753 are Catholic. There are 53 parishes, served by 83 diocesan priests and 3 regular priests, one seminary, one men’s religious community, and 23 women’s religious communities (1949). In 1946 there were 245 converts.
