GRANADA, DIOCESE of. - A diocese, with a city of the same name, in Nicaragua, Central America. It has an area of 29,500 sq. km., with 300,000 inhabitants, of whom 299,000 are Catholics; it has 31 parishes, with 24 diocesan and 24 religious priests, one seminary, 4 male and 4 female religious communities (1949).
The diocese was created by decree of the S. Congregation of the Consistory of 2 Dec. 1913 through the division of the diocese of Guatemala; the four civil provinces of G., Riva, Chontales, and San Juan del Norte were assigned to it; it is suffragan to Managua. The first bishop was Msgr. José Candida Pinol y Batres.
GRANATA, ARCHDIOCESE of. - A metropolitan church in southern Andalusia, with the bishoprics of Almeria, Cartagena, Guadix, Jaen, and Malaga as suffragans. It has an area of 8,448 sq. km. with 682,000 inhabitants, of whom 680,000 are Catholics. It has 246 parishes served by 325 diocesan and 97 religious priests, 13 male and 93 female religious communities (1949). The Seminary was enriched by its founders and generously endowed by Carlo V; it was later erected by Leone XIII into a pontifical university with the usual three faculties. Also noteworthy is the distinguished Collegio-Seminario del S. Monte, founded in 1610.
