GOZO. - Island, city and diocese in the Maltese islands. It has an area of 84 sq km, has 29,787 inhabitants, all Catholic; 14 parishes, with 144 diocesan priests and 28 regulars, a seminary, 4 male religious communities and 13 female ones (1949).
On 16 March 1863 Pope Pius IX elevated Msgr. F. M. Butigieg to titular bishop of Lita, appointing him auxiliary of the archbishop bishop of Malta, promoting G. to a diocese on 22 Sept. 1864, and establishing as cathedral the church of the Assumption, built by Lorenzo Gata between 1697 and 1703. A much venerated sanctuary is that of the B. Virgin "ta Pinu".
