GRAZZINI, ANTON FRANCESCO. - Born in Florence on 22 March 1503, died there on 18 Feb. 1584. He was an apothecary and a writer; in 1540 he founded with others the Accademia degli Umidi, among whose members he called himself il Lasca, and in 1582 the Accademia della Crusca.

He succeeded better in his humorous rhymes than in his serious ones (Florence 1741), and more than to works of learning (Lezioni alla Croce) he devoted himself to those of whimsical fancy: from the Guerra dei mostri (only 1 canto) and the Nanea to the 3 farces (only one complete, Il frate) and from the 7 comedies earlier than '66 (La gelosia, La spiritata, La strega, La pinzochera, La sibilla,
