GUITTONE da AREZZO. - Born in Arezzo to Viva di Michele, chamberlain of the Commune, around 1225. A Guelph, he suffered exile between 1259 and 1260; taught by his own sufferings, he desired to alleviate those of others and, after having duly provided for his family in economic terms, he entered the Order of the Knights of St. Mary, to which he gave the gift of his authoritative word, his austere example and, finally, of the goods still remaining to him by a deed drawn up on 7 September 1293 in Arezzo.
There remain of him a little more than 300 poems (amorous, political, moral, religious) and 36 letters from his last years. His language is rough or harsh; his form deliberately obscure, often, and industriously artificial; his imitation of the Provençal poets continuous and close. Yet there is no lack of notes of delicacy in his nostalgic love songs, of vigor of accent in his political verses and, in the moral and religious ones and in the letters, of loftiness of thought and feeling; and always evident is the imprint of a solitary soul, even in art, in the singularity of his artifices, in the roughness of his form, in the vehemence of his affections.
