GUINICELLI, GUIDO. - Son of Guinicello di Magnano and Guglielmina Ghisolieri, husband of Beatrice della Fratta, judge and poet, born in Bologna between 1230 and 1240, banished in '74 as a supporter of the Ghibelline Lambertazzi, and died in exile at Monselice before '76.
His Rime number only 24, including two fragmentary ones
(v. Rimatori del dolce stil novo, edited by L. Di Benedetto, Bari 1939): most of them in the Sicilian manner, some moral or realistic, two of correspondence (one in admired praise of Guittone, one in scornful admonition to Bonagiunta), few but remarkable those that are new and innovative. He innovates the concept of love as a spiritual fact that purifies and urges toward perfection and thus makes one a participant in the true aristocracy, that of nobility of soul and loftiness of mind. And he innovates above all the manner of singing, enlivening it with enthusiasm for the concept and with a taste for the image which he often draws from science, of which he is a master, and then clothes in enchanted splendor. As for the motifs, love is a light that enraptures or a force that overwhelms; but even if it elevates, it can make one forget the Creator for the creature who bears "an angel's semblance."
