VINCENZO GRIMANI. — Cardinal. Born in Mantua on 26 May 1655, died in Naples on 26 September 1710. He soon gave proof of political shrewdness, thereby winning the favour of Emperor Leopold, who obtained the cardinalate for him from Innocent XII on 22 July 1697. From 1708 until his death he held the office of Viceroy of Naples and in that role proved himself most zealous in defending the interests of the Empire in ecclesiastical matters, even clashing with the authority of the Pope, who went so far as to threaten him with deprivation of the purple.
