GRIMANI, VINCENZO. - Cardinal, b. in Mantua on 26 May 1655, d. in Naples on 26 Sept. 1710. He soon gave proof of political shrewdness, thereby entering the good graces of Emperor Leopold, who obtained the cardinalate for him from Innocent XII on 22 July 1697. From 1708 until his death he held the office of viceroy of Naples and proved himself in that post most zealous in defending the interests of the Empire in ecclesiastical matters, even clashing with the authority of the Pontiff, who went so far as to threaten him with deprivation of the purple.
