GRIMANI, VINCENZO. — Cardinal, born in Mantua on 26 May 1655, died in Naples on 26 September 1710. He soon gave proof of political acumen, thereby winning the favor of Emperor Leopold, who secured his elevation to the cardinalate from Innocent XII on 22 July 1697. From 1708 until his death, he held the office of viceroy of Naples and proved in that office extremely zealous in defending the interests of the Empire in ecclesiastical matters, even opposing the authority of the Pontiff, who went so far as to threaten him with deprivation of the purple.
