GAMBARA, GIANFRANCESCO. — Cardinal, born in Brescia in 1533, died in Rome on 5 May 1587. The nephew of Cardinal Uberto and of the poet Veronica, he was with his uncle at the court of Charles V, then in Rome was secret chamberlain to Julius III, president of the municipality of Rome, and a member of the Inquisition. He received the purple from Pius IV on 10 March 1561. He was administrator of Viterbo (1566), then bishop of Albano (1580) and of Palestrina (1583). Legate to Camerino and Trent, he attended the final sessions of the Council and signed the bull of 23 January 1564.
