GAMBARA, GIANFRANCESCO. - Cardinal, b. at Brescia in 1533, d. at Rome on 5 May 1587. Nephew of Cardinal Uberto and of the poetess Veronica, he was with his uncle at the court of Charles V, then at Rome secret chamberlain of Julius III, president of the municipality of Rome, member of the Inquisition. He received the purple from Pius IV on 10 March 1561. He was administrator of Viterbo (1566), then bishop of Albano (1580) and of Palestrina (1583). Legate at Camerino and at Trent, he attended the last sessions of the Council and subscribed the bull of 23 Jan. 1564.
