GAMBARA, Gianfrancesco. — Cardinal, b. at Brescia in 1533, d. at Rome on 5 May 1587. Nephew of Cardinal Uberto and of the poetess Veronica, he accompanied his uncle to the court of Charles V, then to Rome as secret chamberlain to Julius III, president of the commune of Rome, and member of the Inquisition. He received the red hat from Pius IV on 10 March 1561. He was administrator of Viterbo (1566), then bishop of Albano (1580) and of Palestrina (1583). Legate to Camerino and to Trent, he attended the final sessions of the Council and subscribed to the bull of 23 January 1564.
