GAMBACORTA (Gambacorti, Lat. Gambacorta), Pietro, Blessed. - Founder of the Poor Hermits of St. Jerome, or Gerolamini, b. at Pisa on 15 Feb. 1355, d. at Venice on 17 June 1435. His father Gerardo, of the noble G. family originally from Germany, seems to have been the brother of Pietro G., moderator of the Pisan Republic; his mother Niera, a woman of great piety, was in intimate epistolary contact with St. Catherine of Siena.

While his father, to ensure the lineage, was preparing his son Pietro for marriage, the latter withdrew to the eremitical life on Monte Casana near Urbino, today Montebello. Later, joined by some disciples, he gave origin to the Congregation of the Poor Hermits of St. Jerome, suppressed in 1933 by Pius XI because it had been reduced to very few hermits, so much so as to make common life impossible. In 1729 the Office and Mass of the blessed were approved. The place where he was buried is not known with precision: the diligent searches made especially in the church of the monastery of St. Jerome in Venice, the most probable place, proved fruitless.
