GREGORIO, bishop of OSTIA, saint. – The year and place of his birth are unknown, nor is the year of his death known with certainty; it probably occurred on 9 May 1044 at Logrono (Lat. Lucerinum) in Navarre (Spain). He was a Benedictine monk and abbot of SS. Cosma e Damiano in Mica Aurea in Rome (998–1004).
He was elected bishop of Ostia probably under Benedetto IX, around 1033–34. Some also consider him to have been librarian of the Holy Roman Church, while others say that he was only chancellor. He was certainly a man of great learning and holiness. In 1039 he was sent by Pope Benedetto IX as legate to the Kingdom of Navarre in Spain. On an occasion when the Kingdom was being plagued by locusts, he freed those lands with the sign of the cross; for this reason he is still invoked today against locusts and other harmful insects.
