GAMBARA, UBERTO. — Born in Brescia in February 1489, died in Rome on 15 February 1549. At first he turned to a military career, but later embraced the ecclesiastical one. Leo X appointed him apostolic protonotary. He was nuncio in England. Clement VII sent him to Francis I and then to Henry VIII to solicit French and English aid, while the wrath of the imperial forces descended upon Rome (1527).
Appointed governor of Bologna on 18 May 1528, he was named bishop of Tortona. As the question of the Council was then being debated, in December 1530 Clement VII sent G. to Liège to explain to Charles V the obstacles to its con-
vocation. On 19 December 1539, G. was created cardinal of S. Silvestro by Paul III.
