GAMBARA, Uberto. – Born in February 1489 in Brescia, died in Rome on 15 February 1549. Initially inclined towards a military career, he later embraced the ecclesiastical profession. Leo X appointed him apostolic protonotary. He served as nuncio in England. Clement VII summoned him to Francis I and then to Henry VIII to solicit French and English aid while the wrath of the imperial forces descended upon Rome (1527).
Appointed governor of Bologna on 8 May 1528, he was later named bishop of Tortona. As the question of the Council was then under discussion, in December 1530 Clement VII sent Gambara to Liège to present to Charles V the obstacles to its convocation. On 19 December 1539, Paul III created him cardinal of S. Silvestro.
