GRAMONT (GRANDMONT), GABRIEL de. – Cardinal, died at Balma (Tolosa) on 26 March 1534. Bishop of Conserans (St-Lizier) in 1523, then of Tarbes in 1524; in 1532, of Poitiers, from where he shortly thereafter transferred to the see of Tolosa.
Sent as French envoy to Clement VII in 1530, with the task of countering the influence of Carlo V, he was created cardinal on 8 June 1530. Enrico VIII of England claimed that, when he was in England in 1527, he had received from him the first doubt concerning the legitimacy of his marriage to Caterina d'Aragona; but this is not plausible. It is true, however, that Francesco I, in 1532, for political reasons, entrusted him with promoting Enrico’s offer of divorce.
