GRAMONT (GRANDMONT), GABRIEL de. - Cardinal, d. at Balma (Toulouse) on 26 March 1534. Bishop of Conserans (St-Lizier) in 1523, then of Tarbes in 1524; in 1532 of Poitiers, whence he soon after moved to the see of Toulouse.
Sent by France to Clement VII in 1530, with the task of countering the influence of Charles V, he was created cardinal on 8 June 1530. Henry VIII of England claimed to have received from him, when he was in England in 1527, the first doubts about the legitimacy of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon; but this is not likely. It is true, however, that in 1532 Francis I, for political reasons, entrusted him with promoting Henry’s divorce suit.
