Grimani, Marino

GRIMANI, MARINO. - Cardinal, b. in Venice around 1489, d. at Orvieto on 28 September 1545. Nephew of Cardinal Domenico, he was elected bishop of Ceneda in 1508 and in that capacity took part in the Lateran Council. On 19 January 1517 he succeeded his uncle in the patriarchate of Aquileia. Clement VII created him cardinal on 3 May 1527.

He was also administrator of the diocese of Concordia and from 1544 suburbicarian bishop of Porto. He renounced the episcopate of Ceneda and the patriarchate of Aquileia several times in favor of brothers and relatives, afterward reentering into possession of them again as administrator or by right of reversion. He vindicated the rights of Aquileia and of the part of its territory occupied by Austria, at the Diet of Worms (1521) and at the Congress of Bologna (1529), and had jurisdictional disputes with the Venetian Republic over Ceneda. In the struggle between Charles V and Francis I he worked for pacification at the Congress of Busseto. In 1535 he was legate of Perugia, infested by the Baglioni, and was able to restore quiet throughout the Umbrian territory; in 1544 he was legate of Parma and Piacenza. He was a member of the various Commissions instituted by Paul III for the reform of the officials of the Papal State, of the Chancery, and for the affairs of the Council. He took part in the Conclave in which Paul III was elected. A patron of men of letters and artists, he enjoyed a reputation for great learning. He published anonymously a Commentarium in Epistolas Pauli ad Romanos et Galatas (Venice 1542).
