GRUAMONTE. — Sculptor active in Pistoia in the second half of the 12th century, known for having signed, together with his brother Adeodato, the architrave depicting the Procession and the Adoration of the Magi on the door of the church of S. Andrea in Pistoia (1166). To him are also attributed the carved architrave of S. Bartolomeo in Pantano (1167) and the other, somewhat later, of S. Giovanni Fuorvicitas, also in Pistoia.
The sculptor clearly belongs to the school initiated by that Guglielmo (v.) who carved the pulpit of Pisa now in Cagliari; however, the fact that he signed his work on S. Andrea together with his brother makes it particularly difficult to reconstruct a distinct personality for him. In the Procession and the Adoration, the figures stand out from the damasked background, clothed in tightly fitting garments that cling to the bodies, and everything reveals an intent to achieve primarily effects of light and shadow. The mannerisms of G. can then be traced in other works derived from his hand, and to him is particularly linked the other contemporary sculptor, Biduino (v.).
