GUIDO DA SIENA. - Sienese painter, active in the first half of the 13th century; he signed and dated in 1221 (others read 1271) the panel with the Madonna and Child Enthroned in the Palazzo pubblico of Siena, in which, however, the face, veil, and hands of the Madonna and the face of the Child were repainted by an artist of the Duccio school toward the end of the century.
Almost entirely original, however, are the angels on the trilobed arch, Christ between two angels in the pediment, as well as what remains of the two principal figures; on this basis other works have rightly been attributed to G., such as several small panels with stories of the Redeemer in the Galleries of Altenburg, Utrecht, and Siena, which were thought possibly to have originally been joined to that signed panel; several Madonnas (Siena, Arezzo, S. Gimignano), as well as many works derived from him, reflect that Byzantinism which was to culminate in the more developed work of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
