GUIDO DA SIENA. - Sienese painter, active in the first half of the 13th century; in 1221 (others read 1271) he signed and dated the panel with the Madonna and Child enthroned in the Palazzo pubblico of Siena, which nevertheless shows the face, the veil, and the hands of the Madonna and the face of the Child repainted by a Duccesque artist toward the end of the century.

But almost entirely original are the angels on the trefoil arch, the Christ between two angels in the pediment, as well as the remainder of the two principal figures, so that other works could rightly be attributed to G., such as some small panels with stories of the Redeemer in the Galleries of Altenburg, Utrecht, and Siena, which it was supposed might originally have been joined to that signed panel; some Madonnas (Siena, Arezzo, San Gimignano), as well as many works derived from him, reflect that Byzantinism which was to culminate in the more evolved work of Duccio di Buoninsegna.
