GUGLIELMO DA PISA. - Sculptor active in Pisa from 1159 to 1162 for the pulpit of the cathedral, afterwards replaced at Cagliari by that of Giovanni Pisano.
In this work the various scenes, in which are presented figures wearing garments with thin, closely spaced parallel folds, skillfully paused against a background ornamented with decorative motifs, in a clear spatial vision, tend toward pictorial effects of contrasts of light. The sculptor shows connections with Lombard art (for which reason his origin has indeed been supposed to be Lombard), with Byzantine art, with Provençal art (sculptures on the façades of St-Gilles and St-Trophime), as well as echoes of that pictorial style which is also found in Roman sarcophagi of the 4th century. His work is echoed in that of many followers, such as Gruemonte and Biduino, not to mention the numerous anonymous artists who have left works in the region.
