GUAXUPÉ, DIOCESE OF. - A city and diocese in the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil, erected by Pope Benedict XV on 3 February 1916 through the division of the Diocese of Porto Alegre. It was initially a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mariana, and from 1924 of Belo Horizonte.
The diocese covers an area of 21,000 sq. km. with a population of 575,000 inhabitants, of whom 572,000 are Catholic. It comprises 47 parishes, with 49 diocesan priests and 34 religious priests, one seminary, 12 male religious communities, and 23 female religious communities (1949).
