the poet Maurice, who was younger than her (1810-39), striving to save his soul and whose premature death caused her extreme grief, which she overcame only through the fervor of her Catholic faith.
She left a Journal and Letters which her close friends Trébutien and Barbey d'Aurevilly published in 1855; they were reprinted in 1862 and then very often under the title: E. de G., Journal et lettres. Hardly another book of memoirs can be found that is more beautiful and edifying. It equals Le Centaure, La Bacchante, and the Journal de Maurice by her brother in richness of style; but it surpasses them in the loftiness of its thought, grounded in the doctrine of St. Paul, St. Augustine, Bossuet, and Fénelon.
