GUÉRIN, EUGÉNIE de. - Writer, born at the castle of Cayla near Albi, in France, in 1805, died there in 1848. By her counsel she guided her younger brother, the poet Maurice (1810-39), whose soul she strove to save and whose premature death caused her extreme sorrow, which she overcame only through the fervour of her Catholic faith.
She left a Journal and some Lettres, which her intimates, Trébutien and Barbey d'Aurevilly, published in 1855; they were reprinted in 1862 and thereafter very frequently under the title: E. de G., Journal et lettres. One could scarcely find a more beautiful and edifying book of memoirs. It equals her brother’s Centaure, Bacchante, and Journal de Maurice in richness of style; but it surpasses them in loftiness of thought, founded upon the doctrine of s. Paolo, s. Agostino, Bossuet et Fénelon.
