GUIDO, monaco di MONTECASSINO. - He flourished under Abbot Gerard (1111-23) and was the teacher of Peter the Deacon (De viris illustribus Casinensis coenobii: PL 173, 1010), who calls him «vir in humana eruditione clarissimus, religione et vita probatissima» (ibid., 1044-45). By «quibusdam venerabilibus fratribus» he was charged with putting into writing the vision that Alberic (v.), a monk of Montecassino, and of whom G. was perhaps the educator (A. Mirra, p. 35), had had at the age of 10, and whose fame had spread widely.

But G.'s work did not please, because «quamplura descripsit, quamplura dimisit», so much so that Alberic himself rewrote it, preserving only G.'s prologue (ed. F. Cancellieri [v. bibl.], pp. 144-45; A. Mirra [v. bibl.], p. 86). Again according to Peter the Deacon (loc. cit.), G. also wrote a history of the emperor Henry (IV or VI), and some verses on the fortune of the same Vision, all lost.
