HASPINGER, JOACHIM. - Capuchin and well-known Tyrolean patriot, b. at St. Martin in Casies on 27 Oct. 1776, d. at Salzburg on 11 Jan. 1858.
As both priest and soldier he embodied the popular soul of the Tyrol in the defense of the homeland against Napoleonic domination (1809-10), and for this he was nicknamed Roi-Bart, that is Barbarossa, by the people themselves. Of those memorable events he left an important diary (Tagebuch), which was published posthumously (Vienna 1903) and which constitutes a precious historical source. He then lived, owing to particular circumstances and by special indult, as a secular priest, benefiting from 1856 onward from a modest pension decreed by the Austrian government. Still in 1848 he served as chaplain of the bands of Tyrolean students who were opposing Garibaldi's troops.
