GRATIAN OF PARIS. - Capuchin writer of the Paris province, b. 5 March 1875, took the habit of the Order on 4 Oct. 1896, d. in Paris on 1 Aug. 1943.
Among his publications on Franciscan subjects, particularly appreciated is the Histoire de la fondation et de l'évolution de l'Ordre des Frères Mineurs au XIIIe siècle (Paris 1928), a work awarded a prize by the Académie française, in which he sets out with serene judgment, through the analysis of documents and facts, the settling of the Order, amid conflicting tendencies, into that form of life and activity which corresponded to its historical task. Death prevented him from continuing the study, which stopped at 1318. In the monograph St. François d'Assise. Sa personnalité. Sa spiritualité (Paris 1927; 2nd ed. ibid. 1928; Italian trans., Reggio Emilia 1929; Dutch trans., Rijswijk 1931; Spanish trans., Madrid 1932) he establishes, among various interpretations, its distinctive notes. In the pamphlet St. François d'Assise et l'influence sociale de l'Evangile (Paris-Couvin 1910), he reveals the evangelical factors of Franciscan action. He also published in various journals valuable articles on Franciscan themes.
