GRATIAN OF PISA. - Cardinal, nephew of Eugene III (1147-53), lived in the 12th century under the pontiff Alexander III, by whom he was sent in 1169, together with Card. Viviano, as legate of the Holy See to Henry II of England, to negotiate the reconciliation with St. Thomas of Canterbury.

In 1178 he was elected cardinal deacon of the title of Sts. Cosmas and Damian, and in the same year sent back to Henry II to pronounce the excommunication against the King. Having returned to Rome, he followed the fugitive Alexander III to Venice and was an inseparable companion of the wanderings also of the subsequent pontiffs, who entrusted him with various other missions. On the death of Celestine III he expected the tiara, but Innocent III was elected, who nevertheless made use of him for a peace mission between Genoa and Pisa. The year of his death is not known, and it is to be placed in the early years of the 13th century (he subscribed to a document of 1205).
